🤯🧨 Rumors of Trump's Demise Fuel $1.6M Prediction Market Frenzy
Last weekend, the internet briefly (and falsely) declared President Trump dead — and crypto gamblers pounced.
😬 After Trump had a quiet Labor Day weekend, viral rumors of his demise sparked a $1.6M betting spree on prediction markets like Polymarket and Kalshi. Traders scrambled to bet on whether he’d leave office in 2025.
As it turned out, Trump is very much alive (and called the rumors “sort of crazy”). But the episode revealed the bizarre — and sometimes ethically messy — world of crypto prediction markets.
Fine Print Fail
Many bettors didn’t realize a key detail: death wouldn’t trigger a payout on Kalshi. A bet on "Trump out" had different meanings per platform, a nuance easily missed in the frenzy.
✔️ Polymarket's contract would pay out in the event of death.
❌ Kalshi's market would only resolve for "resignation or other nonfatal ouster."
Even More Controversy
🔗 Advisor drama. Donald Trump Jr. is an advisor at both Polymarket and Kalshi. The latter also has ties with Brian Quintenz, nominated by Trump to lead the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).
⚖️ Regulatory gray zone. Polymarket is technically banned in the US — but still operating.
Entertainment vs Exploitation
🎲 This was a stress test for how far prediction markets can push boundaries.
At SUMEX, we believe in transparency and responsible trading. Whether you’re analyzing trends or managing assets, clarity is key. Maybe let’s keep the bets on markets, not mortalilty. 💀
