📱 Elon's X Can't Make Up Its Mind About Crypto
It's been a wild few weeks over on the platform formerly known as Twitter. X, under Elon Musk, is making moves that have the crypto community constantly shifting between cheers and confusion.
First, they announce Smart Cashtags.
🔖 A big win for traders that lets you tag and track crypto assets directly on the platform.
But almost immediately, they follow up by revising their API policies, blocking "InfoFi" apps to fight "AI slop" and spam. Legit problems that flood the platform with garbage and erode trust.
Yet the policy grenade landed on all creators that earn crypto rewards for posting. Several InfoFi projects built their post-to-earn models around X’s API — KAITO’s token collapsed 23% drop within minutes.
🫠 A chunk of the crypto community feels like the rug was pulled out from under them, especially since X itself doesn't pay most influencers much.
Then came the Starterpacks rollout.
It's a cool idea: curated lists to help new users find the best accounts in categories like finance, fitness, and of course, crypto. But the execution was… questionable.
😮 The "Crypto Founders" pack managed to exclude Vitalik Buterin. Even weirder, the "Meme Trading" pack initially included the notorious LexaproTrader, known for shilling shady projects.
After major backlash (and even calls from firms like Moonpay), X removed the scammy account. But the damage was done — it showed a glaring lack of basic vetting for a feature meant to guide new users.
Biggest issue: mixed signals
🤷🏻 On one hand, they're building tools for crypto traders. On the other, they're cutting off avenues for creators and promoting potential scammers by accident. For a platform that wants to be the "everything app," it needs to get its crypto strategy coherent.
For now, it's a classic case of "watch what they do, not what they tweet." Stay skeptical, do your own research, and maybe don't take your trading cues from a pre-made X list just yet.
