🪙 Whoops: $105K Fee for a $10 Bitcoin Transfer
A crypto user accidentally burned $105,197 — more than a fully-loaded Tesla Model S Plaid — to send ten bucks worth of BTC.
😰 Not a hack, not malware. Just a classic fat-finger.
• Transferred: 0.00010036 BTC (~$10)
• Fee paid: 1.026 BTC (~$105K)
• Normal fee: ~$0.20
• Outcome: Mining pool got an early Christmas bonus
And yeah… this isn’t even rare:
• April 2025: User paid a $59K fee replacing a transaction
• Sept 2023: $510K fee on a small BTC transfer
• Nov 2023: Record $3.1M 😳 fee (later refunded by AntPool)
So... How?
If you use manual fees, you can type anything you want. Mix up the “amount” and “fee” boxes and congrats — you just donated a luxury car to a miner.
Crypto has no undo button.
Were They Just... Super High?
🤪 Optiminer CEO Scott Norris noted: “Hard to say if it was an accident or on purpose”... adding that the user might have been “really high." Hard to argue.
Any Hope for a Refund?
Maybe, if the mining pool feels saintly. AntPool refunded that $3.1M case, but that’s basically refund Powerball. Most pools keep the jackpot.
