๋࣭   ⭑   𝓐 recent shot managed to capture a patch of the sky where three well-known constellations sit side by side: Hercules, Corona Borealis, and Lyrae. today, let's take a closer look at Lyrae - a small yet remarkably significant constellation in the northern hemisphere.

. 𔓕 ּ 𝒢eneral facts about the constellation 𓏼
. • covering an area of just 286 square degrees, Lyrae ranks 52nd in size among the 88 recognized constellations.
. • despite its modest size, it's incredibly easy to spot due to its distinct, compact parallelogram shape and its exceptionally bright anchor star.

. • the constellation hosts the famous ring nebula (m57), a planetary nebula that represents the glowing remains of a sun-like star that shed its outer shell.

. • Lyrae is the radiant point for the annual lyrids meteor shower, which peaks every april and appears to originate near vega.

. 𔓕 ּ 𝓝otable stars in the constellation 𓏼
.   ˖      𝓥ega (alpha lyrae / α lyrae) .
• the fifth-brightest star in the entire night sky and the second-brightest in the northern hemisphere. this bluish-white star sits relatively close to us, only 25 light-years away. vega holds a historic title as the first star after the sun to be photographed and to have its spectrum recorded. due to earth's axial precession, it served as the north pole star around 12 000 years ago and will reclaim that title in another 12 000 years.

.   ˖      𝒮heliak (beta lyrae / β lyrae) .
• such a unique eclipsing binary system. it consists of two massive stars orbiting so close to one another that mutual gravitational forces have stretched them into egg-like shapes. material constantly flows from one star to the other, creating a massive, swirling disk of gas around the system.

.   ˖      𝒮ulafat (gamma lyrae / γ lyrae) .
• the second-brightest star in the constellation, marking one of the corners of Lyrae's central parallelogram. it's a bluish-white giant, roughly 15 times the radius of the sun, with a total luminosity that outshines our sun by more than 2 000 times.

.   ˖      𝓒psilon lyrae (ε lyrae) .
• famously known among amateur astronomers as the « double-double ». while a pair of binoculars easily splits it into two distinct stars, a high-powered telescope reveals that each of those components is itself a tight binary system. this makes epsilon lyrae a complex quadruple system of four gravitationally bound suns!
. 𔓕 ּ 𝓣hanks for reading, and i hope you found this breakdown interesting. feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below. the high-res photo is available in the comments below too. 𓏼
