YC's Summer 2026 RFS: AI as Foundation, Not Feature

Most founders bolt AI onto existing products. YC wants founders who rebuilt their category from scratch with AI as the assumption.

Feature: AI improves a step. Workflow stays the same.
Foundation: AI replaces the workflow. Product collapses without it.

Example: Notion AI = feature. A knowledge system that reads, connects, and synthesizes across all sources = foundation.

The test: Does removing AI break your product? If yes, it's a foundation. If no, it's a feature.

Investors are clustering capital around founders who've done this reframing. Vague AI positioning kills fundraising faster than weak traction.

Before you pitch: Does my product need AI to exist, or does AI just make it better? The answer determines your investor fit.
