Introduction to Cases
• In German, there are 4 cases (also called Fälle or Kasus).
• Certain verbs or prepositions require specific cases.
• We must adjust articles, nouns, pronouns, and adjectives to match the required case. That means we have to decline them, in order to reduce misunderstanding (deklinieren).
1. Nominativ (Wer-Fall)
• Definition: This is the first case, used to answer “wer?” or “was?” (who? or what?).
• Base Form: Used for adjectives, nouns, and pronouns in their basic form.
• Usage:
• Grundform von Adj., Namen und Pronomen.
• Example: Der tierliebe Junge pflegt das verletzte Eichhörnchen. Er möchte Tierarzt werden.
