sec_laundry: serious fun, heavy speakers, fragile systems

we continue to present texts from our printed sec_almanac, documenting events and thoughts from the 2025_sec_year.

here's a text by pasha f about how a diy party format turned into a space for live electronic music, self-built sound systems, spatial reinvention, police interruptions, all-night marathons and community learning.

not just a party report — more like a manual on how people stop simply showing up and start building the thing they want to be inside//

free jazz

we continue to share texts from our printed sec_almanac that features events and thoughts from 2025_sec_year!

this time, we introduce a material about free jazz - an overview of selected tracks from 1959 to 2025, tracing the history and defining characteristics of the genre.

you can read it in telepraph: https://telegra.ph/free-jazz-03-20

this listening list and comments were prepared by a friend of our community, katya - a passionate enthusiast of experimental music. in 2025, katya curated listening sessions on different music genres at sec_space, and free jazz became part of our listening experience.

sec_airspace is a format of online events on the sec_youtube_channel. it transmits/propagates/connects community sounds across locations and borders through streams and live sessions from sec_members around the world.

we're starting on 12th april with sec_airspace//stars, celebrating the day of human space flight.
at exactly 9:47/yvn time in the morning on our youtube channel we will premiere the live sets of sec_members playing in parallel with mission communications recordings, when for the first time in history a human overcame the earth’s gravity.

sec_lecture is a continuous cycle of educational events in various formats about music, production, gear, industry, (psycho)acoustics, sound culture, sound studies and all things sound.

what is noise music, and how did it come to be
workshop by iasai (Ivan) — a russian-born sound artist and enthusiast from barcelona, creating various strains of noise music for the last 8 years.

@iasaimusic will take us through the philosophical foundations and historical arc of noise — how it emerged as a rupture with musical convention and kept reinventing itself across movements/decades, and will try find the broader meaning behind it all.
the second part of the workshop will be a practical demonstration: using only ableton, we'll explore some of the digital techniques to create familiar noise sound palettes.

the lecture will be in english

sec_almanac 2026 is a collection of texts that was made by sec_members as a closing reflection on 2025, but first of all as an experiment in which sec explores sec. it includes interviews with community people about their creative practices, documentation of events, artistic texts, some releases by our community members, music that we listened to — a wide range of enthusiasm around sound and beyond!

in the future, we will be sharing with you some of these articles in our telegram channel//with links in stories.
as for now, here's the intro by tanya_gabuzda, sec_member and an initiator of this activity.

helloo, secscribers!

this thursday and friday we are hosting a workshop from our friendly organization Ars Techne with Lale — social science art artist from Austria.

An Applied Search for Interfering Transmitters
Workshop with Lale Rodgarkia-Dara

info:
grounded in media theory and sound theory, the workshop investigates how signals circulate, how noise is defined, and how transmission systems regulate what becomes audible, visible, and distributable. by shifting coordinates—technical, political, and perceptual—we explore how interference exposes the architectures of contemporary communication systems.

the first day begins with a concise lecture-performance introducing theoretical perspectives on signal and noise, radio as social and political infrastructure, media archaeology, and algorithmic filtering in AI-driven environments. interference is discussed as an aesthetic, tactical, and infrastructural gesture. participants are invited to reflect on questions concerning who defines noise, how media systems modulate perception, and what forms of jamming exist today beyond hardware—symbolic, structural, or algorithmic.
this theoretical input is followed by a participatory oral history exercise. participants respond to two or three focused prompts about their experiences of media disturbance, such as overload, censorship, distortion, silence, misinformation, or algorithmic filtering. contributions may be shared verbally or written down. with collective consent, fragments can be recorded or anonymized. the aim is to assemble a small, value-free archive of contemporary disturbing coordinates rooted in lived media experience.

on the second day, the collected material is revisited and situated within broader media and sound theoretical frameworks. through collective discussion and analysis, participants identify patterns, infrastructures, and power dynamics emerging from the narratives. if feasible, the session may also include a small applied exploration of sound distortion or low-tech signal alteration as a conceptual extension of the theoretical inquiry. this practical moment serves not as technical training, but as an embodied reflection on interference.

sec_2025_recap //
hello, sec people!
this year was huge!

another move happened, gifting our community a bigger house to work and gather. we welcomed our new graduates from sec_school 4th course.
we built our own sound system [sec_grumble_soundsystem] and had a community party on the shore of the azat river, surrounded by mountains, seeing off the last day of summer.
our series of live events sec_laundry grew in scale, skills, and ambition. we even had our first police visit - what a milestone. each time, we built the stage together with the community at such places as @how.evn, @13_20.am, @mansion.am, finishing the season with a big party at hayfilm @moct_yerevan.

thanks to the enthusiasm, openness, and efforts of many spaces and people, a kaleidoscope of events and opportunities unfolded.
we co-shaped barekendan festival together with @lsi.tes at the state @philharmonia_armenia, displayed our sound artwork at the @nationalgalleryofarmenia, became part of eco festival @greengreen_yvn, arevod @arevod_fest, nopa festival @nopa.sound, cyfest @cyland.lab, art forum yerevan @goetheinstitut.jerewan in a small collab with lovely bjij @bjij_bjij, byob @hosq.co, and urvakan festival @urvakanfestival. we also put some interactive noisy furniture at @npakaccea!

and we went beyond our usual borders (kinda). sec_core, represented by @ply_tone_music and @ankstoo, participated in @sonaristanbul with the biggest av performance in sec_history.

this year also brought an amazing documentary film about sec by @razvoroshy and a very warm podcast about our community hosted by london-based show sonic darts on resonance 104.4fm @gwaithswn. we also had lectures, workshops, jams, celebrations and films screenings!

we want to thank everyone who supported us when it was challenging and/or funny with their hands, ears, synths and donations - our residents, members, friends, @goetheinstitut.jerewan and @moleskinefoundation for welcoming us into creativity pioneers cohort.

bye! happy new year!
see you soon
