Common rug strategy: How It Unfolds:
1. Strategic KOL Raise to Attract Credibility
team begins by conducting a private round, carefully targeting Tier 1 and Tier 2 KOLs. The goal here is to build perceived credibility and legitimacy by associating with known names in the space.
2. Deliberate Oversubscription
intentionally let the raise get oversubscribed, often 2-3x. this isn't because they need the funds lol. it’s to create artificial scarcity and amplify FOMO. T1 KOLs feel pressured to “get in before it’s too late,” especially when they see other big names on board.
3. FOMO-Driven Hype Loop
use the oversubscribed status to create a hype narrative across Telegram and Twitter. Larger KOLs are told, “Everyone’s aping in, you don’t want to miss this,” reinforcing a bandwagon effect. leads to a powerful illusion of momentum and network confidence.
4. Implement Strict Sell Restrictions
once allocations are given, the team imposes rigid sell rules (e.g., "You can only sell 0.5 ETH daily or “No selling for X days"). these are positioned as “protection for the community,” but the real intention is to create a scapegoat trap for the KOLs
5. Launch Day: High Tax Farming
introduce extremely high buy/sell taxes under the pretext of “sustainability” or “anti-botting.” or farming for "marketing funds"
this allows them to farm ETH from early trades while creating a short-term liquidity boost that looks healthy on the surface.
6. Trigger the Trap: Wait for KOLs to Slip
over time, 1–2 KOLs inevitably sell slightly more than allowed, or misinterpret the vague rules. These sales are anticipated and in many cases, baited.
7. Publicly Call Out the Sellers
The team then calls out these KOLs in private KOL chats or even semi-public spaces, accusing them of breaking terms or "dumping on the community." or "hurting chart while team is working on next marketing push" inducing distrust and starts a blame game among KOLs.
8. Let KOLs Turn on Each Other
real damage starts here: KOLs begin defending themselves, calling others out, and the internal trust collapses. something the team deliberately wants. this conveniently shifts focus away from the team and places all blame on the KOLs
9. Claim "Lack of Support" from KOLs
The team now has their excuse ready: “KOLs didn’t support, sentiment is ruined, we’re doing our best. upcoming partnership with X project, onboarding mega T1 KOLs, gonna do massive buyback etc”
stop posting updates, delay roadmap milestones, and withdraw from engagement.
10. Mute KOL Chat & Go Silent
team members disappear or post vague, recycled updates.
11. Let the Chart Bleed Out
no abrupt rug pull. instead, let the price slowly bleeds over days or weeks. “slow rug” tactic avoids immediate backlash while quietly exiting with launch taxes and private raise funds.
------
For context
$NEURAL never called out early KOLs for "dumping"
$VERTAI never made KOLs blame each other
$JOS never had any insane sell rules [it was 100% unlocked on TGE]
