IAEA Director General Grossi warns of nuclear safety risks at Zaporozhye NPP due to diesel shortage
Rafael Grossi stated that declining diesel fuel reserves at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant increases risks to its nuclear safety. According to the agency, no diesel supplies have reached the plant since March 2026, and it currently depends on only one external power line.
Grossi emphasized that diesel is essential for emergency generators in case of a new loss of external power supply. These generators ensure the operation of reactor cooling systems, spent fuel pools, and other critically important equipment.
The IAEA head called for increasing fuel stocks at the site before winter arrives, when demand may rise and the situation could become more acute.
