These aren't just quick answer questions; they are a real chance for colleges to see who you are. These essays let you come alive on the page. We can examine the four kinds of essays and how to approach them, based on what makes a college application essay successful.


🌟The Why Major? or Academic Interest Essay

The Point: The purpose of this essay is to show you are a person who likes to learn, not just someone who is trying to reach a goal.

🐆How to Write It Well:

What Not to Do: Don't just write something like, I like economy study because it is needed for running businesses.
What to Do: Tell a story about how you came to like what you want to study. Talk about how your thinking developed from one clear point in time—maybe it was something you read, something you worked on, or even just an odd question that popped into your head—to what you plan to do in the future.
Show Colleges You Know Their School: Be specific. Mention a paper a professor at the school wrote, a certain program the school has, or even just a class with a strange name. That will tells them you did some research on their school.
The Hook: Connect what you like to do with something bigger. How will you use your major to help your campus? This area is where you can show what makes you different from other students.

🌟The Extracurricular Activity or Impact Essay

The Point: The point of this essay is to show the reason behind anthing on your list of things you've done.

🐆How to Write It Well:

What Not to Do: Don't just write about your job or what you were supposed to do. They can read your list; this is your chance to show your personality.
What to Do: Zoom in on one main point. Talk about a talk you had, a time when you failed, or a small win. Tell the story in a way that the people reading your essay feel like they are also there.
Leadership is About Helping People, Not a Title: Show how you have helped people by acting as a mentor, being original, or just being around to support others. Who or what did you change?
Be Honest: Write about the hard parts: the bad feelings, long nights, and growth that does not always make it onto a resume. Connect everything to the things that are most important to you.
