«choosing favorite books is brutal. how can i pick just one from Foer? probably this one from the list — i love both the book and the movie with Eugene Hütz from Gogol Bordello and young Elijah Wood, even though the endings differ. but i also feel connected to his last published novel, Here i am, especially for how it handles divorce.

then there's Sally Rooney. i don’t care much what other people say; her language sparkles for me. every one of her four books feels important in its own way, but how do you pick a favorite? the latest one, Intermezzo, which echoes The Brothers Karamazov, or one of the earlier ones i’ve re-read twice each? Conversations with friends felt almost ruined by its adaptation anyway.

or Yanagihara — her writing is something. but when choosing just five, it’s like i’m suggesting you should read them, and who wants to recommend a book that might start an existential crisis?

there’s also scandinavian children’s literature. i could happily live with just that for the rest of my life.

the books i love seem to cross into each other. Claire Keegan’s Small things like these a short christmas novella that, despite its size, digs deep into the influence of the Catholic church on Irish society, much like John Boyne does. Lungina and Foer explore family history and war, while Jennifer Clement and Madeline Miller write the way i feel feelings.
