The Battle of the Cursoล‚are - Lepanto: a Venetian Perspective

On October 7th 1571, the waters of the Gulf of Patras became the stage for one of the most decisive naval battles of the early modern Mediterranean.

At Lepanto, the fleet of the Holy League confronted the Ottoman navy in a massive clash of galleys, soldiers and artillery. The battle ended in a major Christian victory and marked a turning point in the naval history of the Mediterranean.

The Venetian Republic provided roughly half of the ships deployed by the Christian coalition, making Venice the largest single naval contributor to the Holy League.

Did you know about the 'Plague Line' in the United States? Its West of the 100th Meridian.

Well thanks to ships sailing from Asia and carrying infected rats; the plague found its way to the United States. Fortunately sanitation efforts largely eradicated the plague in the cities (San Fran, Seattle), but it found its new home east of those locations.

Yersinia Pestis thrives in cool, dry, higher-elevation climates. So watch out for prairie dogs and squirrels.

Yes there are antibiotics to treat the plague, The sooner you start the better, especially if its pneumonic plague. Don't delay

Tablets: doxycycline, levofloxacin
IV: gentamicin

and a few others if things are dire.

While I am monitoring this event, Pneumonic plague has short incubation time (typically 1-3 days) and rapid kill rate (2-4 days); this typically self-limits the pathogen from spreading into a global event.

The evolutionary trade off:
-high virulence (killing potential) comes at the cost of transmission (dead hosts can't transmit the infection)

In order for this to change would require a few factors:
-"asymptomatic" transmission (you have the disease but don't show symptoms...don't get me started)
-mild infectious symptoms (You aren't crisp, but you'll still function)
-airborne transmission improvement beyond droplets (droplets need close contact)
-continuous person to person contact (>1 infectious transmission per person)
-Antimicrobial resistance.
