“THEY WERE AFRAID THAT IF THEY WALKED THROUGH THOSE DOORS, THEY WERE NEVER WALKING OUT.”
Katelyn Johnson, RN, former Director of Medical Services at Paralyzed Veterans of America in Washington, D.C., gave powerful testimony at Sen. Ron Johnson’s @SenRonJohnsonUS roundtable on COVID-19 hospital protocols.
Johnson described the “moral injury” suffered by healthcare workers who felt forced to choose between complying with COVID policies they knew could harm them or walking away from the patients who desperately needed their care.
Some left medicine altogether.
But perhaps most disturbing was what she heard from veterans themselves.
“A lot of patients chose not to go in and receive care because they were too afraid that they would become prisoners of the system.”
Hospitals were supposed to be places of healing. Instead, Johnson said patients felt “imprisoned” and “captured,” while their families were prevented from being there to advocate for them.
