Exactly three years ago today, Dr. Reiner Fuellmich was arrested upon his arrival at Frankfurt Airport. Two days earlier, he had been kidnapped in Mexico. After a nearly week-long prisoner transport, he arrived at the Rosdorf prison, where he was held from October 2023 to June 2025. From June 2025 to October 2026, he was detained at the BremervΓΆrde prison. Early on Thursday morning of last week, he was transferred without any prior notice to the Lingen prison β roughly 200 kilometres away, also in Lower Saxony. Since 13 October 2023, Reiner Fuellmich has been deprived of his freedom.
Because, apparently, no place was available in the regular prison wing at Lingen either, he was placed in a basement cell. The walls are damp and partly covered in mould. His lawyer, Katja WΓΆrmer, has filed applications with the competent penal enforcement chamber (Local Court of Lingen / Regional Court of OsnabrΓΌck) for the residual suspension of the fixed-term prison sentence on probation. At the same time, she is demanding his immediate transfer to another cell with an unobstructed view to the outside and free of mould β alternatively, a transfer within the Lingen facility should a return to BremervΓΆrde prison or an immediate release be refused.
The sentence is three years and nine monthsβ imprisonment for breach of trust in connection with two loan agreements. Breach of trust is a property offence β legally a misdemeanor, not a felony.
Even if one were to accept the verdict as justified, the central question remains: how can such a length of imprisonment be proportionate? Reiner FΓΌllmich had no prior convictions. He had worked as a lawyer for decades. Yet he has now been behind bars for three years β and even after the latest transfer, no release is in sight.
In stark contrast stand cases of the most serious violent and sexual offences, in which suspects are released from pre-trial detention or regain their freedom after a significantly shorter time. This treatment is grotesque. It reveals a profound imbalance in the justice system: a man with no previous record is held for years as if he posed an extraordinary danger.
Three years in prison for a property offence.
Three years during which sex offenders and violent criminals are often long free again.
This is not the rule of law. This is arbitrariness.
This imprisonment is a scandal.
