(RIME 3/2.01.01.19, CDLI P432129):

Russian Assyriologist Boris Alexandrov, whose posts we share from time to time on our Russian-language channel, posted an interesting note from Seton Lloyd about Khorsabad:

"Seton Lloyd writes that early Arab geographers mentioned Khorsabad—or Khishtabad—as a village situated on the site of the ancient Assyrian city of Saraun or Saragun. The original Assyrian name, Dur-Sharrukin, can be discerned in this toponym."

(Sargon, as our readers know, is an Ancient Greek rendering of the Akkadian name Sharrukin, "the true king").

In the South of Iraq, we have a similar story with Karkh Maysan, and with the name of the muḥāfaẓah Missan, which is the heir of the ancient Mecene, even if not having exactly the same borders. The past is always present...

Dr Alexei Kassian, a well-known Russian linguist, spent half of this summer on a project his readers may not have expected from him: he recreated the Royal Game of Ur from precious materials (Lebanese cedar, Afghan lapis lazuli, bone and ochre). His wife, Dr Olga Popova, a specialist in Neo-Babylonian cuneiform documents, wrote several posts about the board on her Russian-language Telegram channel and shared a video of it. This sparked a lively discussion on our Russian channel, The Central Marsh, where readers posted links on reconstructing the game's rules, along with their own AI-assisted analyses of them.

It's a fine example of how the famous artefacts of Mesopotamia's past can be brought back to life. After all, studying history may well be a game! If you know of other recreations of this game, one of the best-known finds from the Royal Tombs of Ur, or have any thoughts on reconstructing Mesopotamian artefacts, feel free to share them in our discussion room.

Greetings to you, our dear readers, thank you for remaining with us!

Your humble channel author is back after a long and rather unannounced absence. Honestly, I saw it coming. This year was a tough one and brought a lot of changes to our lives, and they needed time to be thought through and accepted.

One of the biggest, though not the only one, was the re-dating of our site, Tell Dehaila in Dhi Qar. We had long assumed it was Late Old Babylonian (Bronze Age), but it turned out to be Chaldean (Early Iron Age). This is a huge leap forward in our understanding of the whole Sulaybiyah region. It also means a completely new historical context: we've had to get to know it properly, find new and motivated colleagues who specialise in it, and work out new directions for our research.

On top of that, the last two seasons gave us more material than we were used to, and we are still busy analysing it.

In the middle of all this, our dear friends from Armenia invited us to their son's wedding, may all their family be blessed, and we spent several wonderful days among close neighbours of Upper Mesopotamia, the Armenians. As far as I know, Yerevan is the only capital in the world with cuneiform stelae standing in a public square right in the middle of the modern city. It's a good reminder that the past is always present.

Meanwhile, we've gathered plenty of new material, and not only from Armenia. So regular posting is back, and praise be to God.

On the first photo, the reed qalams from Matenadaran, the famous manuscript house. The reed tools were first used to write cuneiform, and then were adapted for ink.

The second photo shows Sevan, a great Armenian sweet-water lake, seen from Hayaravank.

Recently, we received news of fresh looting at Dehaila, and of pottery from the looted area seized by the Dhi Qar Archaeological Police.

We praise the work of the Archaeological Police and send our warm greetings to the officers who have shared with us both the joys and the hardships of fieldwork. May Allah give them strength in their work.

Everything found in the soil of an archaeological site belongs to the people of Iraq, represented by the Iraqi Government and by the State Board of Antiquities and Heritage. And naturally, it is the duty of the State to protect this heritage. At present, in Iraq, an archaeological site is truly secure only if there is a police station on it, with officers on duty day and night, as at Ur or Uruk, or if the site lies next to a village whose sheikh and people have taken responsibility for protecting it, as at Lagash. Otherwise, looters can come at night, and no single guard can watch every corner of a huge archaeological site all the time.

But Iraq has 20,000 archaeological sites, perhaps even more. It will never be possible to put police stations at every one of them.

There is another solution:

Don’t loot.

If you have friends, neighbours, fellow villagers, school pupils, or simply anyone willing to listen, tell them not to dig into archaeological tells looking for treasure.
At Dehaila, the looters committed a crime before Allah and a crime before the law. And what did they find? What the police seized is shown in the photograph.
Was it worth committing a crime for this? Was it even worth getting to the desert and digging there in the dark?

This is ordinary pottery from the Chaldean period.

For an archaeologist, such pottery is valuable when it is found in its proper place inside a house. When we put together all the finds from one house, piece by piece, like a puzzle, we can tell a story, sometimes many stories, about the everyday lives of the people who once lived there.

This is why we excavate: so that you can travel through time.

A looter cannot travel through time. He can only find old broken pots.

And he will not find gold.

There is no gold at Dehaila.

Why am I so sure? Because Dehaila was an ordinary city, not even the capital of the Chaldeans. Their capital was elsewhere. And when the city was abandoned, apparently because there was no longer enough water in the river, its inhabitants left peacefully and took their valuable belongings with them.

So it is useless to dig there looking for gold or treasure.
The treasure of Dehaila is knowledge.

When looters destroy an archaeological context, they rob themselves, their children, and all Iraq of that knowledge.
Explaining this to people, and telling them why looting destroys something that can never be restored, is one way of protecting archaeological sites.

The other way is to keep archaeological sites alive through scientific excavation.
We count on our Iraqi colleagues and friends to allow us, and other Iraqi and foreign archaeological teams, to continue this work: to continue granting excavation permits, to help us in the field, so that the "book" of archaeological site is being read and not neglected and left to the looters.

We are deeply grateful for all the help we receive.
And we are confident that, with patience, we will overcome looting and preserve knowledge.

Across from our house there is a school, and today, on this clear and warm first day of autumn, sounds were drifting over from it. We know this technique from films, and I used it a great deal in my former life: reverberation makes the words impossible to make out.

Not a single intelligible word reached us from the school. But the sounds did: a short speech by the headmistress, followed by a long stretch of enthusiastic emceeing. At one point they started singing the national anthem; the host joined in through his microphone. He would have done better not to, because hitting the notes was plainly not among his talents...

Then I got busy with something of my own, stopped paying attention to the school, and remembered it only when silence fell. And the silence was absolute, like in the countryside, as though nothing had happened at all. The caretaker went on doing whatever he had been doing in our courtyard, and the tall poplars stood there, slowly turning yellow.

People in the know, returning from the school, told me that the host was “a former physics teacher.” I’m almost afraid to ask what he teaches now. They also said that “everyone was dying laughing at his singing.”

I worked in a school myself for several years, long ago now, and I remember that the feelings on this day were always mixed. We, the teachers, as it were, used to congratulate one another on “the New Year.” Those were the years when school uniforms were no longer worn, and quite a few other things had not yet appeared either.

Then I started remembering our own first-day assemblies, back when I was a pupil at that same school. In fact, there was a proper assembly only when I entered first grade. After that, we were usually taken to the Museum of Lenin, which stood not far away. We would sit in the soft chairs of the conference hall and listen, presumably, to speeches. I remember none of them. Nor do I remember us singing anything. Though perhaps I have simply forgotten.

I dedicate this post to the heroes who work in Russian schools today, and to the folks who, just as we once did, are learning their own important lessons, whatever the school may think it is teaching them.

The day before, on the last day of summer, I spent a couple of hours in the village where I grew up. For the first time in many years, at least twenty, I drove out to look at the old road, long since abandoned.

Once, we travelled that road endlessly, on foot and by vehicle, in winter and in summer, in the sidecar of a motorcycle, or sitting on sacks of potatoes behind a tractor...

The field where they used to sow fodder crops is now overgrown with weeds, and for some reason several cubic metres of rotten slabwood have been dumped there. The road itself looks exactly as an abandoned road ought to look. I have no complaints about the road.

For some reason I took not a single beautiful photograph, although there was a lake with scraps of mist hanging between two wooded islands, and a little wood running down to the water, and our village street, not abandoned at all but still wonderfully lived-in, homely and warm.

Now, as I sit down to write this, when night has already fallen and those poplars can no longer be seen, I suddenly remembered verse by Russian poet Rubtsov, who died long ago, and Dulov’s setting of these lines, which I want to share.

The poem is about departure:

"A blurred road, crooked poplars, yellow fields, the distant sound of a whistle as if from another land.

At first there is no regret. Then comes the harbour, darkness, sailors hurrying people aboard, and finally that sudden pain rising from the fields: the ache of love, of the dates long gone, and of leaving behind.

I sailed on, farther and farther, never looking back, towards the misty shore of my foolish youth."

More than once our English and Arabic readers asked me to reproduce here the diary-like mood of the Russian channel. Well, let us try. In Russia, September 1st is the first-day of school, and everywhere there are schoolchildren in dress uniform and teachers with flowers. It is also the first calendar day of the autumn which means, in Russia, that our tender and merry summer is over, and the colds will be coming soon, in the literal and in the figurative sense. I wrote a post in Russian about all that, and did my best to translate it. If there are things unclear, perhaps our admins can answer your questions in the chat room. Feel free to ask.

Our channel takes its title from the Sumerian name for southernmost Iraq, kur a.ab.ba, literally “the land of the sea-water,” or māt tâmti in Akkadian, “the Sealand.” (The circumflex ^ marks a “superlong” vowel, here resulting from the contraction of two different vowels in tiāmtu, “sea.”)

Some Assyriologists familiar with the ecology of Southern Iraq point out that by a.ab.ba the ancients meant not only the open salt sea, but also the brackish or freshwater lakes, now called ahwar in Iraqi Arabic. Māt tâmti, the Sealand, could therefore be translated as “the land of the sea and the ahwar,” since one helps the other to form the distinctive environment of the Mesopotamian South.

The place where we are now, and our native city, St Petersburg, is also situated in a very flat river delta, with the large brackish estuary of the Neva River. Formally, it is a sea, and international rules of maritime navigation apply here. But it is very shallow, full of reeds, and only slightly salty because of the constant inflow of fresh water from the Neva.

Lika sent me these beautiful photos from the shore near St Petersburg, where she went for a walk to take a break from rendering orthophotos from our excavation. We are processing our data now and thinking about how best to organise our future work.

Today, August 15, Archaeologist’s Day is celebrated in Russia. In our country, it is an informal occasion, but no field team would ever miss the chance to have a feast after work. In Ukraine, it is an official observance, though unfortunately not a national holiday :), and it is also observed in Belarus and elsewhere in Eastern Europe. We don’t know whether there is an official occasion like this in Iraq. If there still isn’t, perhaps our Iraqi colleagues might consider joining in?

Anyway, we send our warmest greetings to all our friends, colleagues and readers, to everyone who helps keep our peaceful profession alive in these difficult times, and who preserves the memory of the generations who came before us. May peace, joy, good luck, freedom and inspiration always be with you!
