Israel carried out a preemptive strike against Iran. In Tel Aviv, the operation was called “Roar of the Lion,” while the Pentagon referred to its involvement as “Epic Fury.” Here are a few thoughts on what’s happening:
1⃣ A preemptive strike by Israel looks like a logical move. If a clash is inevitable, taking the initiative has strategic value.
2⃣ Israel is conducting an information campaign aimed both at its own population through the media and at the Iranian public via cyberattacks. Moreover, it doesn’t appear to struggle with moral hesitation in matters of military strategy — the enemy’s leadership is viewed as a priority target.
3⃣ The U.S. has once again labeled Iran a key sponsor of terrorism and stated its intention to eliminate not only the nuclear program but also missile infrastructure and naval assets. The rhetoric is tough, and the objectives are broadly defined.
4⃣ Major global players are not providing Iran with meaningful support, meaning it will have to rely primarily on its own resources. The only question is whether there is enough strength for a full-scale confrontation, or whether we’ll see another attempt to de-escalate and smooth things over.
