This morning, we are near 400.000 signatures! This pace is tremendous, and it is faster than most of the organizers anticipated.

The goal has always been 1 million. We generally expect to reach this in early days of August.

Why? What makes 1 million signatures better than 999.999?

Under the European Citizens' Initiative process, 1 million signatures is the legal threshold that compels the European institutions to formally engage with the proposal.

At any fewer, there is no obligation for Brussels to take any action. Politicians may discuss the issue, journalists may cover it, and supporters may continue to raise awareness - and all of this has mostly happened on the issue - but the European Commission is not required to respond.

At 1 million valid signatures - if the required country thresholds are also met - the situation changes. The initiative must be formally reviewed. Eva Vlaardingerbroek, Martin Sellner, and five other organizers from five other EU countries secure the right to present a remigration proposal to the European Commission.

A public hearing is held in the European Parliament, and the Commission must issue an official response explaining what action it intends to take, if any.

This does not guarantee that the proposal becomes law. It does guarantee that the proposal can no longer be ignored. The ECI is influential but not overwhelmingly powerful.

Successful initiatives have shaped EU policy debates and contributed to legislative changes. Examples include initiatives concerning Right2Water and Save Bees and Farmers, which is obviously more politically feasible than the war effort and economic pain of remigration.

Many successful initiatives have not resulted in the exact legislation their organizers sought, and things rarely go according to the plan perfectly. This is why it is so important to persistently spread awareness and intelligently advocate for remigration.
