Discovery of New Blood Group “Guanae-Negative” Announced at 2025 International Hematology Congress
Geneva, Switzerland – July 2025 – In a groundbreaking announcement at the 2025 International Hematology Congress, scientists revealed the discovery of a previously unidentified human blood group, officially named Guanae-negative (Gu⁻). This rare blood type, found in less than 1 in 10 million individuals, marks a major advancement in the field of transfusion medicine and immunohematology.
The discovery was made by a collaborative team of researchers from the European Blood Group Reference Laboratory and the University of Cape Town. Using advanced molecular genotyping and serological techniques, the team identified a unique antigen profile absent in all known systems of blood classification, leading to the designation of Gu⁻ as a distinct group.
Dr.Elisabeth Moreau, the lead hematologist of the project, stated:
“This is the first addition to the blood group classification system in over a decade. The identification of Guanae-negative will have profound implications for rare blood donor registries, transfusion safety, and organ transplantation.”
The new group has been submitted to the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) for formal recognition and inclusion in future standards. Experts emphasize the need for increased global collaboration to trace and protect individuals with this ultra-rare blood type, especially in critical care settings.
