In the Gesta Herewardi, Hereward the Wake and his men lost their way in an unfamiliar forest during a storm-and were led out of it by an ethereal wolf. Perhaps Woden continued to watch over His Christian son as he fought for his folk’s freedom.
In the gloom of the forest, a huge wolf approached them, fawning on them like a dog and walking along in front of them, and initially thinking it was a large dog from a nearby village, he and his men followed it until they found a road, and lights like will-o-the-wisps appeared on their spears; very Wodenic.
When the sun rose, they were astonished to find their guide had been a wolf, and they had reached Stamford, and the wolf vanished. They gave thanks to God; perhaps the wrong one.
A similar account appears in the Historia Langobardorum, wherein Lopichis was captured in a raid by the Avars, but managed to escape, and was guided back to his people by a wolf he came to recognize as a divine gift.
