General Tips | Russia

• Do not litter. It is illegal as well as offensive to Russians.

• A guest invited to a Russian home should take flowers, sweets or liquor as a gift.

• Exporting art objects and changing money with private citizens is illegal.

• Expect long waits at restaurants, and ask the staff what is being served that day.

• Homosexuality is not illegal. However, there is little tolerance for homosexuality in public, and homophobic sentiment is widespread. This may result in verbal harassment and, in more extreme instances, assault. Public display of affection carries financial penalties, as well as the risk of deportation and a short prison sentence.

• Russians regard the following as ill-mannered: wearing your coat into a public building (it should be checked at the cloakroom), standing with your hands in your pockets, speaking or laughing loudly in public and whistling indoors.

• Photography of military installations and significant places like airports, railway stations and the metro system is forbidden. Use of commercial film or camera equipment is also restricted in some public areas. Visitors should seek permission before taking photographs.
