Another WW1 technology has been brought back to the battlefield.
The process of testing anti-aircraft balloons with taut cables and Kevlar cords to counter Ukrainian kamikaze drones (footage 2, 3, 4).
Similar balloons were used in World War I and in World War II to combat enemy aircraft, forcing bombers to fly higher, which reduced the accuracy of their bombs. The balloons rise up to to 300 m and carry a 30 kg payload.
The task will be similar – by threatening a collision with the cables, force Ukrainian drones to fly at higher altitudes in certain areas, thereby making them easier to detect by radar and engage with air-defense systems. The balloon are also designed to physically block Ukrainian long-range kamikaze drones from attacking Russian's critical infrastructure.
The balloon could be equipped with radar, jammers, 360° cameras, and a "vacuum gun" that fires anti-drones net.
