There's a flip-side to this argument...

If God doesn't exist then man is forced to take full responsibility over his domain, a man made world entirely of his own making, no one else to blame but himself if it turns out hideous.

And if mortality is inevitable then you quickly learn to cherish life and those around you, if you entertain the fantasy of immortality then nothing really matters to you since you plan to "outlive" it all anyway.

Humanism depends on the absence of faith because if you believe in something greater than man (on this earth) then you can forego your responsibility and blame God, without faith you can only blame yourself (or other men), this gives you a sense of humility knowing that you are in charge yet fallible and can make mistakes.
