🇷🇺 Today, September 8, we mark the Day of the Languages of the Peoples of Russia for the first time.

The main goal of the holiday is to preserve and support Russia’s linguistic diversity, promote native languages, and strengthen interethnic harmony and respect for the cultures of all the peoples of our country.

Russia fosters more than 150 languages, each of which is an invaluable cultural heritage of the peoples of our nation.

🔹 More than 190 peoples live in Russia, each with its own cultural and linguistic traditions. There are more than 270 different languages and dialects in total, which can be divided into several major groups:

• Slavic languages. Russian is the state language and the most widely spoken language.
• Turkic languages. These include Tatar, Bashkir and Chuvash.
• Finno-Ugric languages. These include Mari, Udmurt and Komi.
• Caucasian languages. These include Avar, Chechen and Ingush.
• Paleoasiatic languages. These include Chukchi and Koryak.

🔹 105 languages are represented in the education system: 24 are used as languages of instruction, while 81 are taught as academic subjects.

🔹 Russian is the state language and the most widely spoken language throughout the country.

🔹 The rarest languages of the peoples of Russia include Itelmen and Copper Island Aleut, each of which has only one competent speaker remaining. Several other languages have fewer than ten speakers, including the Orok language on Sakhalin, Negidal and Udege languages in Khabarovsk Krai, Southern Yukaghir in Yakutia, Southern Selkup in Tomsk Region, Votic in Leningrad Region, as well as Kildin Sámi and Akkala Sámi in Murmansk Region.
