Football fans get Flower Market business discounts
Local football fans will be able to score exclusive deals at 40 businesses around the Mong Kok Flower Market after attending matches at nearby Mong Kok Stadium, as part of a campaign to boost the ticket stub economy. To enjoy discounts and promotional offers, fans have to present their ticket stubs at participating businesses, among them 34 flower shops, five restaurants and a Chinese medicine clinic. The campaign applies to five Hong Kong Premier League matches scheduled between October 19 and December 19. Fans do not have to redeem their discounts immediately on matchday. They can do so till the end of the year. Lawmaker and chairman of the youth-development group GDCD Association Vincent Cheng helped organise the event. “I hope that more people can come to Mong Kok to watch our football games and also spend some money to support our local shops,” he said. Cheng, also the vice-chairman of the Major Sports Events Committee – the body overseeing the "M" Mark system for major international sporting events – hopes more mega events would adopt a similar approach to boost the economy. Meanwhile, Charles Cheung, general secretary of the Football Association of Hong Kong, China, said attendance at Premier League and Hong Kong, China team matches tops 300,000 every year. He's hopeful the cross-promotional drive would lift match turnout while helping the wider economy. “What I expect is that this campaign can boost the attendance to some of our events, or make use of our attendance to boost the economy of Hong Kong,” he said. Organisers expect around 3,000 fans to attend the campaign’s kickoff match next Monday, a top-flight clash between Kitchee and Lee Man. Edited by Edmond Fong
