HK defeats Cambodia to win inaugural Asean Cup
The Hong Kong, China football squad made history on Saturday at Kai Tak Stadium, defeating Cambodia 2-0 to lift the trophy of the the first-ever Asean Challenge Cup. Playing before a passionate crowd of 31,000 fans, the SAR team scored a goal in each half of the match. Striker Matt Orr put the home side up 1-0 in the 41st minute, after a brilliant through ball delivered by Sun Ming-him. The hosts would later double their lead, 2-0, in the 52nd minute, after a tackle on Philip Chan by a Cambodian defender inside the box. A VAR intervention resulted in a penalty, which Everton Camargo confidently converted. The victory cements Hong Kong in football history as the first champions of the Fifa Asean Challenge Cup. The inaugural 2026 competition, a Fifa-backed tournament designed to boost football competitiveness across Asia, was split into a two-division system.
