UK experts helped shut down Covid lab leak theory - weeks after being told it might be true

Sir Patrick Vallance among scientists behind paper that stifled debate into the origins of the virus

"Top scientists including Sir Patrick Vallance were warned that Covid-19 could have evolved in laboratory animals, but collaborated in a paper which shut down the lab leak theory, it has emerged.

The paper, “The proximal origin of SARS-CoV-2,” published in Nature Medicine in March 2020, argued that a natural spillover event caused the pandemic, and was hugely instrumental in stifling debate into the origins of the virus.

But newly released emails from early 2020 show that in the weeks before publication the authors held lengthy discussions with experts, including Sir Patrick and Sir Jeremy Farrar, the head of the Wellcome Trust.

In those discussions, experts were advised that the unusual features seen in Covid-19 could have evolved in animals in a lab, as well as in the wild.

They were also warned that the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) had been carrying out research on bat-coronaviruses at worrying levels of biosecurity."

A primer here prepared by my colleague, friend and talented creative brain, Ella Smart, summarising the UK nexus to Proximal Origins, via Wellcome, Farrar, Rambaut, SAGE. The questions raised are serious, unaccounted for and have been completely sidestepped by the UK's £200m plus Covid Inquiry and its army of 150+ lawyers. With the sole exception of coverage from Sarah Knapton in The Telegraph (link below), the issues remain - as far as I am aware - largely unexplored across UK media.

As news breaks of Jeremy Farrar's resignation from the WHO, here is a reminder that The Wellcome Trust, the UK charity led by Farrar in 2020/2021, "supported' the fraudulent Proximal Origins paper, funded the infamous Imperial College London 'lockdown until vaccination paper', benefitted to the tune of hundreds of millions of pounds from direct investments into pharmaceutical companies including Covid vaccine manufacturers AND ALSO paid millions of pounds in research grants to key UK scientists sitting on the influential SAGE committee. Only a handful of those funding relationships were ever declared by the relevant scientists.

Oh yes, I nearly forgot. Sir Jeremy was also described as the 'father figure' of Proximal Origins in testimony given by one of the co-authors of the report to a 2024 US congressional report, as well as having played a key role in orchestrating and drafting the paper.

David M. Morens, 78, of Chester, Maryland, pled guilty to conspiracy to commit offenses and to defraud the United States. Morens served as a senior advisor in NIAID’s Office of the Director from 2006 through 2022."
