How are solar cycles affecting climate today? This has nothing to do with CO2! Very clear graphic by John Shewchuk
A "Solar-Driven Dance" -
Climate history is not a random fluctuation, but a result of three overlapping solar patterns working together. This is a "solar-driven dance called climate change,": variations in the sun's activity are the main conductor of Earth's historical warming and cooling periods.
The Long-Term Cycle (Blue Line): Labeled the Milankovitch Composite Cycle, this straight blue line represents very long-term changes in Earth's orbit and position relative to the sun. The purple dates (630, 1130, 1630, 2130) along this line mark specific points in this long timeline.
The Medium-Term Cycle (Red Wave): The prominent red sinusoidal wave represents the Bray & Eddy Composite Solar Cycle. This shows a repeating pattern of higher and lower solar activity over centuries. The graph notes that the red line extends beyond 1950 as an extrapolation (a prediction based on past patterns).
The Short-Term Cycle (Yellow Bars): The vertical yellow bars represent Sunspot cycles, specifically the approximate 11-year Schwabe cycles. These are frequent, shorter bursts of solar activity.
Historical Climate Periods
Warm Periods: Eras like the Roman Warm Period, Medieval Warm Period, and the current Modern Warm Period are shown alongside peaks in the solar cycles.
Cool Periods: Conversely, colder eras such as the Dark Ages and the Little Ice Age align with troughs or lower points in the solar activity waves.
But some people want you to believe it is CO2 instead!
Which do you believe: the simplistic CO2 theory, or the complex solar dance?
