Most of my interviewees considered that non-monogamy caused great hurt and trouble between women and was not ultimately a progressive course for lesbians.

Julie Bindel says that it was ‘very common’ but it caused ‘loads of trouble’ (Julie Bindel, interview 2013). Lynn Alderson says that ‘because we were challenging everything’ lesbian feminists challenged monogamy too, but ‘in most cases it was fairly disastrous. Most women stopped doing it.’ It caused, she says, ‘a lot of distress’, but also ‘a lot of fun as well’. Lesbian feminists did, she emphasises, have ‘a good laugh around these things as well’, which gives the lie to the common idea that feminists are ‘humourless’, and she remembers ‘laughing a hell of a lot’ (Lynn Alderson, interview 2013).

❕Sandra McNeill explains that she was inoculated against the attractions of non-monogamy because she had come across it when she was in anarchist politics, ‘where there were some men who thought that women should just sleep with any man and that there shouldn’t be monogamy, and it was all about men getting sexual access to lots of women, …pressurising women’. Men would extract sexual access by saying things such as: ‘You’re actually holding up the revolution by not having sex with me.’ So, she was ‘a bit suspicious’ when she came across similar ideas in lesbian feminism (Sandra McNeill, interview 2013).
