30 thousand political prisoners in Ukraine.
Persecution of Ukrainians for their thoughts, statements and actions. Analysis for the past week.
From April 1, 2022, every week, on Thursdays, we analyze the information of the Prosecutor General's Office on criminal cases that the law enforcement agencies of Ukraine are investigating, starting from February 24, 2022.
We published the last analysis on June 23.
On June 30, the prosecutor's office released new information.
The total number of criminal cases under politically motivated articles: "waging an aggressive war", "treason", "encroachment on territorial integrity", "sabotage", "collaboration activities" for the week from June 23 to June 39 increased from 28,482 to 30 683, that is, by 2201 (increased by 2093 over the previous week).
This means that the prosecutor's office opened an average of 314.5 criminal cases per day. Last week, from June 16 to June 23, the security forces opened an average of 299 politically motivated criminal cases per day.
That is, the total number of politically motivated criminal cases initiated over the past week has increased significantly compared to the previous period.
Significantly, from 6536 to 7136, that is, by 600, the number of those accused of "infringement on territorial integrity" has increased (Article 110, it mainly persecutes bloggers and those who expressed an opinion different from official propaganda).
That is, 84 Ukrainians are accused under this article every day. Over the previous week, 82 people were accused a day.
Thus, here we see that the number of repressions has increased.
Also, the number of people accused of "high treason" (Article 111 of the Criminal Code) increased from 1170 to 1217 during the week.
That is, an average of 7 citizens a day were accused of "treason" over the past week.
And earlier the rate of accusations of "high treason" was 6-7 per day.
That is, over the past week, the pace of accusations of Ukrainians in "treason" remained at an average level.
"Treason" (Article 111 of the Criminal Code) is the most serious political accusation. An accused citizen can end up in prison for 15 years or for life.
Also, over the past week, the number of accusations of Ukrainians under Articles 111-1 (“collaboration activity”) and 111-2 (“assistance to the aggressor”) has increased significantly, from 1271 to 1463, that is, by 192.
Over the past week, the number of accusations against Ukrainians under these articles increased by 66.
Thus, the pace of political repressions in Ukraine last week increased significantly compared to the week of June 16-23, and remained at a fairly high level.
See the dynamics of political repressions in Ukraine below.
Almost all those accused on politically motivated articles are in prison.
The first of them, Oleksandr Matyushenko, a left-wing activist from Dnepropetrovsk, was sentenced on May 24 by a local court under Article 110 (“infringement on territorial integrity”) to 3 years in prison.
On June 3, the former leader of the Union of Left Forces, Vasily Volga, who was arrested on March 7, was released from prison.
On June 7, Odessa journalist Yury Tkachev, who was arrested on March 19, was released from prison.
On June 20, blogger Gleb Lyashenko, who was arrested in Lvov on March 31, was released on bail.
All of them paid large bails for their temporary release, but their trials continue and they cannot leave their place of residence without the permission of the investigating authorities.
The rest of those accused on politically motivated articles, as far as we have information, are practically all in custody.
At least three supporters of the opposition MP Ilya Kiva arrested by the SBU at the end of February 2022 were killed.
Thus, today we can already talk about 30,000 political prisoners in Ukraine.
From June 8 to June 23, 2022, the Administrative Court of Appeal in the city of Lviv banned 13 leftist and opposition parties.
See below for a chronicle of political party bans in Ukraine.
