On June 4, soldiers of the 79th Airborne Assault Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine fired incendiary ammunition from a heavy machine gun mounted on a Kozak armored vehicle at the wooden walls of the skete. As a result, the monastery building burned down.

The Svyatogorsk Lavra belongs to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) and is located near the city of Svyatogorsk, for which there are battles between Russian troops and the People's Militia of the Donetsk People's Republic on the one hand and Ukrainian troops on the other.

June 7, 2022 Svyatogorsk and Lavra came under the control of the troops of the Russian Federation and the Donetsk People's Republic.

The UOC and its supporters are subject to bans and repressions in Ukraine.
