On May 27, 2022, the Council of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) decided that the UOC is separated from the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) and becomes independent - autocephalous.
Also, the Council of the UOC condemned the position of Patriarch Kirill of the Russian Orthodox Church regarding the invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine.
Until today, the UOC has been an autonomous church in canonical unity with the ROC.
Without a doubt, today's decision of the Council of the UOC was made under great pressure from the Kyiv authorities and ultra-right formations.
Previously, the UOC in every possible way emphasized its unity with the ROC.
However, with the outbreak of hostilities, mass repressions against the UOC began.
Supporters of the UOC, such as the poet Yan Taksyur, were arrested and charged with "high treason."
The activities of the UOC in some cities in the territory controlled by the Kyiv authorities were prohibited contrary to the Constitution of Ukraine (the cities of Konotop, Brovary, Borislav and others).
Temples and other property of the UOC are seized by ultra-right formations and transferred to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU, an autonomous church within the Patriarchate of Constantinople, whose center is in Turkey, is loyal to the Kyiv authorities).
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has registered a bill to ban the UOC.
After such a decision of the UOC, two questions arise:
1. Will the repressions against the UOC and attempts to liquidate it now stop? Will the Kyiv authorities release the arrested supporters of the UOC? Will the far-right stop seizing the churches of the UOC and transfer these churches to the OCU?
2. Do other autocephalous law enforcement churches (out of 15 in the world) recognize the autocephaly of the UOC?
