Donbass 8 years ago and today.
Katia Osminogova:
On May 26, 2014, I seemed to be preparing for the session. Then I heard that hum. A Ukrainian military plane circled low in the sky. People ran out of their houses and looked up at the sky. We did not yet know what to do in such situations.
Then the village of Oktyabrsky, the Tochmash plant, the railway station area, and Kyiv Prospekt came under fire. Peaceful people died.
Of those who were identified, 18-year-old parking worker Vladislav Karpenko.
I will never forget the photograph of the murdered woman at the train station.
I constantly replay the words of one of my girlfriends from the past in my head. I called her when I found out that the station area was under attack. She lived nearby. “Yes, civilians died. But I'm glad that this trash is kicked out. Then she left for Ukraine, and it was already difficult for me to communicate with her.
I remember another girl. She supported the Euromaidan, but on the same day, seeing photos of the wounded militiamen, she began to collect money for their treatment: “These are our brothers, fathers and husbands. They must not die."
On the day when the war came to my city, I did not yet know that everything would drag on for many years, that we would have sleepless nights due to shelling, the death of friends and relatives. I just had a shock: the Ukrainian army is bombing us. I still considered Ukraine my country then. Of course, the war was already on. But I had some kind of absurd and stupid hope that everything would not affect us.
On May 26, 2022, I am writing this note in the hallway. Shells whistle outside the window, the sounds of arrivals are heard. Sooner or later it will all end. But I remember very well how the war began for me. Life will still win.
Attached to the publication are photographs of a dead civilian and Vladislav Karpenko, a murdered parking worker.

Oksana Chelysheva, May 26, 2022:
Received photos from yesterday’s shelling of the Kievsky district of Donetsk, as a result of which a man born in 1977 was killed and seven more men were injured of varying severity (1981, 1990, 1979, 1978, 1976, 1983), including a teenager born in 2005.
