On May 1, 2022, a law came into force that introduces important changes to the Code of Criminal Procedure and significantly restricts the rights of Ukrainians.
The law itself was voted by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on April 14.
The law allows detaining citizens without giving reasons for up to 9 days (216 hours) during martial law.
Until now, it was possible to detain only up to 3 days (72 hours).
If necessary, a judge or prosecutor may repeatedly extend the period of detention of a citizen up to a month.
Also, now the law enforcement agencies of Ukraine, if necessary, can conduct searches of citizens at night (from 22-00 to 6-00) and without witnesses.
Previously, the Ukrainian security forces did not have such legal powers.
