🌍✨ Culture Share Saturday: Arizona
Arizona is a nature lover’s dream! Around 85% of the state is covered by national forests, parks, and protected areas — including the breathtaking Grand Canyon 🏞️
☀️ In Arizona, people often talk about “dry heat” — very high temperatures with almost no humidity. It might sound easier than humid weather, but it can still feel intense!
🌵 Did you know? Arizona is home to the densest populations of saguaro cacti in the United States. These iconic plants can live for over 150 years and grow up to 40 feet tall!
🌪️ And here’s a new word: “haboob” — a powerful dust storm common during the summer monsoon season (June–September). These storms move quickly and can reduce visibility to almost zero 😮
Classroom Activity Idea:
“Weather & Survival Challenge”
• Teach key vocabulary: dry heat, humidity, cactus, desert, dust storm, visibility
• Show students photos of Arizona landscapes (desert, canyon, storms).
• In pairs, students answer:
- What would you wear in Arizona?
- What would you take with you in a haboob?
- Would you prefer dry heat or humid heat? Why?
Speaking task: Students imagine they are tourists visiting Arizona and record a short video or dialogue: “Today we are in Arizona. The weather is… We can see… We feel…”
🎯 Goal: practice weather vocabulary, speaking skills, and cultural awareness.
