🍰✨ Culture Share Saturday: American Fruitcake Tradition ✨🍰
Today for Culture Share Saturday, let’s take a look at one of the most famously love-it-or-hate-it American traditions: fruitcake.
In the United States, fruitcake is often baked or given as a gift during the winter holidays. Packed with candied fruit, nuts, and spices—and sometimes soaked in alcohol—it has a reputation for being amazingly durable. So durable, in fact, that it became a long-running joke in American pop culture that fruitcakes are passed around from person to person but rarely eaten!
Despite the jokes, many families still enjoy making homemade fruitcakes, and the tradition appears in holiday movies, comedy shows, and seasonal advertising. It’s a fun example of how food can become a cultural symbol.
📚 Discussion Questions for the Classroom:
• Are there foods in Russian culture that play a symbolic or humorous role?
• Why do certain foods become holiday traditions, even if not everyone enjoys them?
