Of the 423 employees in the Migration Office, which is also responsible for naturalisations, 13 are EU foreigners and 24 third-country nationals. 14 of these third-country nationals only have a temporary residence permit. There are no restrictions on decisions on residence law. “All processing in the Office of Migration has the authority to make and draw decisions within the framework of the tasks entrusted to them,” the city said in a statement.
The process in the Darmstadt immigration office is by no means an isolated case, but a widespread practice. In addition, it was found that in some places third-country nationals, sometimes even with a temporary residence permit, make up a relevant part of the workforce.
