I built a hands free emergency app after my mom died alone. It can alert 911 silently without you speaking or touching your phone.

I'm the developer. Posting this here because I want real feedback from people who actually use Android every day, not just a download.

Three days before Christmas in 2022 my mom had a massive heart attack at home by herself. She had no way to call for help. By the time anyone knew, it was too late. That's why I built Safety Net.

Safety Net is a personal safety app for Android that works with your phone and optionally a smartwatch. The main idea is that you shouldn't have to unlock your phone, open an app, and dial 911 when you're scared, hurt, or in a situation where drawing attention to yourself could make things worse.

You can trigger an emergency hands free with a voice keyword, a gesture, or a physical button depending on how you set it up. When it goes off, it sends 911 your location and the type of emergency without you having to get on a phone call and talk to a dispatcher. For things like a break in, domestic violence, or any situation where speaking out loud isn't safe, that silent dispatch piece is the part I'm most focused on getting right.

It also monitors heart rate through a smartwatch and can act if it detects something dangerous, alerts your emergency contacts with your location, and has family monitoring so one account can cover parents, kids, or whoever you add.

The app is live on Google Play now with a 7 day free trial on single and family plans.

A few things I'm still wrestling with on Android specifically and would honestly love input on:

Background reliability on Samsung and Xiaomi has been the hardest part. Even with foreground service and battery optimization prompts, some OEMs still kill the app aggressively. If you've built or used anything that needs to stay alive in the background for safety or health, I'd love to hear what actually worked for you.

Wear OS heart rate integration and how much people trust automatic triggers vs manual ones.

How to explain permissions without scaring people off. Location, microphone for the keyword, notifications, background activity. People understand why a safety app needs them but the Play Store flow still makes a lot of folks nervous.

I'm going to be in this thread answering questions. If you try it and something breaks or feels wrong on your device, tell me. That's the kind of feedback I need most.

Pi SD Writer (Android): write Raspberry Pi images to microSD from your phone (USB OTG, cloud/local sources, chunked streaming)

https://preview.redd.it/vpz1txwa1kah1.png?width=1536&format=png&auto=webp&s=f52f5075d2c090cbd78ea5cbbe278bdea33d60f3

Hi folks, I’ve been building **Pi SD Writer**, an Android app focused on one workflow: preparing and flashing SD images for Raspberry Pi/SBC devices directly from a smartphone.

The goal is to remove the laptop/desktop requirement and keep the process reliable even on mobile hardware.

# What it does

* Select image source from:
* Google Drive
* Local file storage
* GitLab Releases (Premium)
* GitHub Releases (Premium)
* Raspberry OS catalog
* Supports common formats:
* `.img`
* `.img.gz`
* `.img.xz`
* `.iso`
* `.zip`
* Writes directly to microSD over **USB OTG**.
* Uses **streaming/chunked transfer** to reduce peak RAM usage during write operations.
* Includes guided 3-step flow:
* Source selection
* USB/device validation
* Write progress + live log output

# Technical approach (high level)

* Cloud/release sources are validated before selection so users get a list of valid image assets first.
* Write path is designed around block/chunk streaming rather than loading full images in memory.
* UI exposes progress state, ETA area, and live diagnostic logs for visibility during long writes.
* Connectivity-sensitive sources (Drive/GitLab/GitHub/Raspberry OS) are disabled when offline.
* Google auth is used for account/session features and plan management.
* Base plan has a monthly write quota; Premium unlocks unlimited writes and extra repository integrations.

# Why I built it

The existing SD flashing flow is still desktop-first. I wanted a phone-first workflow that is practical when traveling or when you only have Android + OTG adapter + SD reader.

# Known constraints

* OTG hardware quality matters (reader/cable stability can affect results).
* For network-backed sources, internet connectivity must remain stable during transfer.
* UX and recovery paths for interrupted writes are still being improved.

# Feedback I’m looking for

1. Which source integration matters most to you (Drive/local/GitLab/GitHub/Raspberry OS)?
2. Would you prefer stricter pre-write validation (slower, safer) or faster start?
3. What diagnostics are most useful in the live log when a write fails?
4. Any must-have feature before wider release?
