In a previous post, I referred to artificial intelligence as AI, and I've made a conscious decision to continue calling it that for now. My reasoning has nothing to do with politics, and for the first time publicly, I'll say that I disagree with President Trump's decision to rename AI as SI, or Super Intelligence. I believe it was more of a marketing decision than a technological one.
Here's my reasoning. The anticipated progression has always been from AI to AGI (Artificial General Intelligence), where machines develop human-level intelligence across a wide range of tasks. Beyond that comes ASI (Artificial Superintelligence), where machines surpass human intelligence in virtually every field. That's an entirely different world, and I believe we're closer to it than most people realize.
So here's my question. If we're already calling today's AI superintelligence, what are we going to call it when we actually reach that level? That's where I think we jumped the gun.
I've been deeply involved with AI every single day for the past year and a half, so this sudden name change threw a monkey wrench into things for me. I'm not protesting it, and maybe I'll eventually get used to calling it SI. I just believe these different stages of intelligence matter, and there's a reason we established those distinctions in the first place.
