Headcanon for why we barely see alicorns

I am new to the show, however we barely see any alicorns.

We know that alicorns do exist as their own distinct race as Celestia and Luna were canonically born alicorns. And if I recall correctly, they are from their own homeland where everyone is an alicorn.

We know that (at least naturally born) alicorns have dark alter egos.

What if the reason why we barely see alicorns in the show is because their dark alter egos pretty much eradicated their own species?
