How to store password for database connection?

I just started learning C++ in school and want to expand one of my projects. I’ve set up a PostgreSQL database and connected it to C++ by hardcoding the username, password, and other details. I’ve been trying to figure out how to securely store this sensitive information, and I came across the idea of using environment variables. I’m looking for resources or tips on how to implement this.
