Made a tool for building HMI screens for embedded Linux panels. The panel runs on LVGL and Qt.
I've been working on this for a while and figured this sub might like it.
Every touchscreen panel project I've worked on ended up running Qt + Weston on the board, and changing one screen meant rebuilding and reflashing. That got old, so I split it into two parts.
On the panel there's a small C program built on LVGL that draws straight to the display (DRM/KMS), with no Qt and no compositor. It reads the screen design from a file when it starts, so pushing a new screen is just copying a file over SSH. No rebuild.
On your PC there's a desktop app where you draw the screen on a canvas the same size as the actual panel. You can also type something like "pump station overview with suction and discharge pressure and an alarm list" and it lays the screen out for you (Ollama, OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, whatever you have). Then you hit deploy.
A few things I'm happy with:
The preview on your PC is drawn by the same C code that runs on the panel, compiled for Windows. So the preview really is what you get on the glass.
If a new screen doesn't come up within 25 seconds, the panel quietly goes back to the last version that worked. You can't brick the display with a bad deploy.
You can fake all the sensor values with sine and ramp signals, so you can test screens before the hardware even exists.
If you already have a PySide app, it can deploy that too.
I've mostly tested it on a Toradex Verdin i.MX8M Plus, but it should work on any 64-bit ARM Linux board. You don't need any hardware to try it, since the whole thing runs on a laptop with simulated inputs.
I would like a honest review on this and also provide me with which hardware platfrom should I integrate this with in future?
It's MIT and still early, so there will be rough edges. I'd really like to hear from people who build these panels for a living, especially if you think this approach is wrong.
