Armed Israeli settler gangs fired at and attacked two Agence France-Presse (AFP) journalists Tuesday in the occupied West Bank village of Aqraba while they were reporting on settler violence against Palestinian olive farmers.
Photographers Jaafar Ashtiyeh and John Wessels were assaulted within 500 meters of Israeli occupation forces who did not intervene. Settlers opened fire, stole Ashtiyeh’s camera gear, and beat him with rifle butts inside a marked “Press” car. Wessels was held at gunpoint, and a Palestinian man was shot in the foot.
Ashtiyeh, 58, was hospitalized in Nablus with severe bruising. AFP demanded a full investigation into the beating and robbery of journalists before Israeli occupation forces. The Foreign Press Association condemned the incident as a blatant attempt to intimidate the press.
