Iraqi Security Forces Reinforce Syria Border To Prevent Spillover Of Extremist Groups

The Popular Mobilization Units will not enter Syria but will secure the border amid fears of an ISIS resurgence or invasion by the Turkish-backed Hayat Tahrir al-Sham militants who are now fighting in Aleppo

The head of Iraq's Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) head, Faleh al-Fayyadh, issued orders on 2 December to reinforce his country's border with Syria amid the ongoing assault on Aleppo, Syria's second-largest city, by Turkish-backed extremist militants from Hayat Tahir al-Sham (HTS).

Fayadh said the PMU, a branch of the Iraqi armed forces, will “increase the presence of units and reinforce them on the fronts.”

He stated that “what is happening in Syria has direct repercussions on Iraqi national security" and issued a warning against “whoever tries to advance into Iraq.”

“The Popular Mobilization Forces do not operate outside Iraq, and its forces have not entered Syria,” he added.

Tensions on the Iraq–Syria border have been high since this summer when the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) released hundreds of ISIS militants from its prison in Hasakeh in northeast Syria and from the Al-Hol camp on the Iraq–Sinjar border, opposite Iraq's Yezidi-majority district of Sinjar.
