Israel Declares UN Chief 'Persona Non Grata'

Tel Aviv has accused the institution of being a 'swamp of antisemitism' in response to UN officials condemning the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz on 2 October declared UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres “persona non grata” and barred him from entering the country, claiming Guterres had not “unequivocally” condemned Iran's retaliatory attack.

“Anyone who cannot unequivocally condemn Iran's heinous attack on Israel, as almost every country in the world has done, does not deserve to step foot on Israeli soil,” Katz said via social media.

“A Secretary-General who gives backing to terrorists, rapists, and murderers from Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, and now Iran – the mothership of global terror – will be remembered as a stain on the history of the UN,” Israel's top diplomat added.

“I condemn the broadening of the Middle East conflict, with escalation after escalation. This must stop. We absolutely need a ceasefire,” Guterres said in response to Iran targeting military sites across Israel in retaliation to Israel's bombing of the presidential guest house in Tehran earlier this year.
