Dozens of Journalists Detained by Israel Face ‘Torture and Starvation’

The Palestinian Prisoners Club notes that 12 journalists arrested by Israel were forcibly disappeared

The Palestinian Prisoners Society said on 2 June that Israel has arrested 80 journalists since the start of its war on Gaza and that 49 remain in detention.

The last journalists to be detained by Israeli forces were Bilal al-Taweel and Mahmoud Fatafta from Hebron, their detention has been extended until 9 June under the pretext of “completing the investigation.”

“The occupation authorities continue to escalate the policy of arresting journalists, in addition to threatening them, field attacks, detention, and ongoing prosecution, in light of the continued genocidal war against our people in Gaza,” the organization said.

The human rights group noted that four of the journalists detained by Israeli forces are women named Ikhlas Sawala, Rola Hassanein, Bushra al-Taweel, and Asma Hreish, highlighting that all are under administrative detention apart from Hassanein, who has been arrested under the claim of “incitement.”

“The Israeli occupation authorities continue to escalate through the policy of arresting journalists along with threats and attacks on the ground, and the ongoing detention and prosecution, in light of the continued war of genocide against our people in Gaza,” the Palestinian Prisoners Club said.

The group notes that 12 journalists were forcibly disappeared in their arrests in Gaza, most of whom were detained during the Israeli aggression on Al-Shifa Hospital.

“They are facing all the revenge and punitive measures imposed on prisoners and detainees in general, in addition to torture and humiliation, starvation and systematic medical crimes,” the group continued.

It called on the international human rights community, including the UN, to uphold responsibilities regarding violations of human rights and the crimes committed by Israel against Palestinian prisoners.

The Brussels-based International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) reported that Israel has killed at least 103 Palestinian journalists and media workers have been killed and several others injured or have gone missing since the beginning of Israel’s aggressions on Gaza.
