Turkiye to Join Genocide Case Against Israel at ICJ: FM
After months of condemning the Israeli genocide in Gaza, Ankara recently imposed a trade embargo
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced on 1 May that Ankara has decided to participate in South Africa’s case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that accuses Israel of committing genocide in Gaza.
He noted that following talks with legal experts and academics, Turkiye decided to back South Africa’s accusation of Israel.
“We presented our assessment to Mr. President, and today, I am declaring Turkiye’s political decision to that extent. We hope the current process before the ICJ will proceed properly,” Fidan said during a joint press conference with Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi.
"Coercive measures against Israel are essential," Fidan added. "While there is hunger in Gaza and civilians are being targeted, what does the international community wait for? We are faced with a choice. We will either side with humanity or share the price of crimes.”
Turkiye's top diplomat said that Ankara is working on a formal application for the matter and will present it “once the legal text is drafted.”
“Turkey will always stand with the people of Palestine,” he stressed.
In early April, the country implemented a trade embargo with Israel six months into the genocide in Gaza.
