Algeria Leads Push for Palestine to Become Full UN Member
A specialized UN committee is reviewing the application for Palestine's bid, which the US has so far not blocked.
The Palestinian Authority (PA) is making a renewed push for Palestine to become a full member of the UN, helped in part by non-permanent UN Security Council member Algeria, despite opposition from Israel and the United States.
On 8 April, the Security Council referred the application of the observer State of Palestine for full UN membership to the specialized committee reviewing new member applications.
The proposal for the referral, made by Ambassador Vanessa Frazier of Malta, Security Council President for April, received no objections from the body's 15 members.
Palestine, which has observer status at the UN, first applied for full membership in 2011 before the bid stalled.
Last week, Palestine's envoy Riyad Mansour sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to resubmit the application.
The League of Arab States, the Organisation of the Islamic Conference, and the Non-Aligned Movement also wrote to Guterres to support the bid.
"We wish to bring to your attention that, as of this date, 140 member states have recognised the state of Palestine," the letter stated
