Israel continues to court the breakaway African territory in a bid to project power over the strategic Horn of Africa and Bab al-Mandab Strait

The President of Somaliland arrived in occupied west Jerusalem on 14 June for the first-ever state visit by a head of state from the breakaway African autonomous territory.

Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi said his arrival in Tel Aviv marked a “historic milestone” in the territory’s relationship with Israel, the only UN member state to recognize Somaliland’s independence from Somalia.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog welcomed Irro, saying in both English and Somali: "Ku soo dhawow Israel" — welcome to Israel.

Located on the strategic Horn of Africa, Somaliland has functioned as a de facto state since declaring independence from Somalia in 1991, with its own governing institutions and security structures – despite receiving no recognition from any UN member state until Israel recognized it in December.

At the official reception, Herzog said both Israel and Somaliland had "acted with courage and realism" by establishing relations. He added that Somaliland’s independence has been a reality on the ground for several decades.
