Officials want the ICC to drop its Gaza and Afghanistan cases and shield senior US leaders from future prosecution
US President Donald Trump is pressuring the International Criminal Court (ICC) to amend the Rome Statute and create an exemption for US and Israeli leaders, officials confirmed on 11 December.
The move is aimed at shielding both governments from accountability for war crimes, including Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
The demands form part of an escalating attempt to block current and future investigations tied to Gaza and Afghanistan, where Israeli and US officials are directly responsible for grave violations of international law.
US officials have informed the court and multiple ICC member states that Washington wants the tribunal to terminate its probes into Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Israeli defense minister Yoav Gallant, both of whom are accused of war crimes in Gaza.
They are also seeking to end a separate investigation into past actions by US troops in Afghanistan.
