Warnings Grow Over UAE-Backed RSF Militia Atrocities In Sudan

Sudan’s UAE-backed paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have overrun the city of El-Fasher, sparking fears of mass killings and abuses just a day after ceasefire talks in Washington broke down after the UAE refused to discuss the situation in El-Fasher, which has been besieged for more than 500 days.

On Sunday morning, 26 October, RSF fighters stormed the city, home to around 260,000 trapped civilians, capturing a major army base and breaking through the last lines of defense. The RSF later declared full control of El-Fasher, hailing its fall as a pivotal turning point after recent territorial losses to the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).

The UAE has been linked to substantial financial, military, and political backing to sustain the RSF, and has taken part in a public relations campaign designed to obscure its role supporting the militia, which has also included providing foreign fighters.

Local organizations and international human rights groups have cautioned that the fall of El-Fasher could lead to widespread atrocities.
